The Incredible Diversity of Coral Reefs
Coral reefs are home to an astonishing array of species, including fish, mollusks, crustaceans, and countless other marine organisms. In fact, although they cover less than 1% of the ocean floor, coral reefs support approximately 25% of all marine species. This biodiversity is made possible by the unique structure of the reef, which provides food, shelter, and breeding grounds for a wide range of organisms. The Secret Lives of Corals

This mass spawning increases the chances of fertilization and helps maintain genetic diversity within the reef. Such events are crucial for the survival and resilience of coral populations.
Threats to Coral Reefs
Despite their resilience and adaptability, coral reefs are facing unprecedented threats. Climate change is the most significant danger, as rising ocean temperatures cause coral bleaching—a stress response where corals expel their symbiotic algae, leading to a loss of color and, if prolonged, death. Ocean acidification, another consequence of climate change, weakens coral skeletons, making them more susceptible to damage from storms and other physical impacts.
Additionally, overfishing, pollution, and coastal development have degraded many coral reefs worldwide. Destructive fishing practices, such as blast fishing and cyanide fishing, can obliterate entire sections of reef. Pollution from agricultural runoff, sewage, and plastic waste further exacerbates the problem by smothering corals and disrupting the delicate balance of reef ecosystems.
